Why Poland is great place for you Mr VC

August 3rd, 2011 No comments

I am trying to tell here that many VCs forgot about Poland and they shouldn’t. I was visiting several conferences in UK, Germany and States of course and still there is no Poland attention. So Why Poland should be on your list Mr VC!

Great people with big brains

I can’t find as great developers and engineers as we have here in Poland. Maybe Valley rocks here, but Germany or UK, doesn’t. One part of the case is students experience, their intelligence and hacking / coding focus but other side of the coin is their ability to work in modest environment. For VC it means cheap, for Polish engineers it means “I am not lingerer, I don’t complain. I take this old crap computer and start working cause I am motivated by my ability to survive”. (part of this flows straight from our history)

Market still didn’t do homework

Poland is still a little bit behind western countries when it comes to technology adoption. This is great as you VCs can work on this market to be leaders in the future. I mean, companies you invest in, they will be leaders as the wave will come. If you wait with your investments you will be out of the game.

Market is not Poland, is World.

I don’t want to say you should invest in Poland and stay in Poland. Polish ecommerce market grows 20%, yearly (according to Kelkoo.co.uk). So you should consider investing here and finding good teams to build web / mobile app, offer it here in Poland but have global ambitions. Why? Because it will be cheaper for you to conquer global market, starting in Poland. Why cheaper? Because Great Polish people with big brains don’t expect fancy computers or offices. They can start with crap. Why? I answered this above in Great people with big brains section.

to be continued…….

Polish Minister for the Economy met with SaveUp Team

July 11th, 2011 No comments

Last week Polish Minister for the Economy chose our startup so we were invited for the breakfast. We spent great day in Ministry of Economy discussing our business potential with Mr. Pawlak (Polish Minister for the Economy) and his advisors. After press conference, we also participated in several business meetings. This meeting opened completely new era in our startup development, we found our photo recognition technology to be appreciated by the specialists and the highest Polish, business government unit.
SaveUp Team and Polish Minister for the economy

Our photo recognition technology is being used in two products for now:

1st: SaveUp – which enables users to buy goods straight from printed ads, simply by taking picture

2nd: art4europe.com – which enables users to take a picture of a painting and afterwards mobile app recognizes it and reads its description in a chosen language

Why startup? Why enthusiasm?

July 8th, 2011 No comments

I felt something what makes you write sometimes. I don’t know maybe it is about throwing certain emotions and feelings out of oneself. Sometimes there is such a feeling inside which makes you write and speak. Today, it was the day when I did want to.
Just by observation I came to the conclusion that enthusiasm sweeps me off my feet. While building startup we meet with publishers, bookstores and generally deal with book market. While gaining new customers we meet so-called haters and malcontents. My conclusion is that without enthusiasm you cannot go forward. You can’t just do it and that is the fact. If you see worn-out marketing manager in Polish publishing house, the man without energy, saying with his squinted eyes: „well, your application is fine but this is future”.

What can you tell this man?

One should tell him to quit his job and find a better one, for marketing manager, marketing I repeat, can’t be bored and have no energy. This is him who is responsible for the future of a company he is representing. Meanwhile he is not willing to step into this future. He thinks that, when this future comes closer, he will step into it.
Enthusiasm allows to kill fear, boredom and stress. It grows from inside, it appears in the moments of doubt. It is very important. I’m rarely bold enough to make a radical statement but in this case I want to emphasize my certainty. If you don’t have the enthusiasm in yourself – you’re gone! Where does the enthusiasm come from? I think it is a combination of: regular physical exercises, faith in what you do, work in a way you like, and open-mindedness.
Regular exercises – it is just so obvious how difficult it is to find time and will to move your body.

Faith in what you do – I’m not a psychologist and I don’t know the scientific principles of this problem. However, if you sow grass in your garden with the conviction that it will wither because it withers every year, this will be an action without faith. If you prepare a report for your boss and you know anyway that he will not use it, this is an action without a faith. If you build up startup and you know that people want your product or service this is an action with faith, even when you have an illusion. My startup idol is Christopher Columbus, the best startup man in the world. He believed he would reach the shore! I suppose it is within our competence to take care about your faith. If you do startup and have any doubts whether your boss uses what you deliver then you must take care about dissolving these doubts. Don’t blame your boss, because you are responsible for your level of faith.

Work the way you like – it is super important in my opinion. If you like to work in your underwear and a cigar in your mouth, do it this way. That’s all I can say. Why startup? Ha, and this is what I love – for in startup possible is something which is not possible in corporation. Only in startup you can sit in your underwear with a cigar in your mouth and you’ll still be building up value and rocking. In corporation your boss approaches you and says: where is your fucking suit? Obviously the notion „work the way you like” doesn’t only refer to clothing dimension, if you like to get up at 5 o’clock in the morning and work till 9:30 and then go to the swimming pool for an hour, it’s cool, startup allows you to do it. However there is one “but” – freedom is not free (I read such a sticker on the bumper of big Buick in the USA). If you have a flexible time you have the responsibility, i.e. while being at the pool it might turn up that the server is down and then it would be your responsibility. Eventually everyone should work the way they like.

Open-mindedness – again the subject I am no expert on, but I can say something as a man. Enthusiasm grows somewhere in the land of an open mind. It makes us look at new circumstances with a smile. Open-mindedness cultivates enthusiasm in a certain way. When we see a black man who is a Methodist, we can either say that his faith is interesting or we can say as well: go away heretic! Openness balances on extremes, it makes us get to know something different, gather information in the head, mix these pieces of information and blend them with the information we have. Eventually we’ll obtain something which has a label “made in enthusiasm country”. I don’t know how to call it but a mixture of something new is created. Something that says: “now I have a unique mix with which I can do this and that. That’s where the enthusiasm grows in saying: “thanks to my openness I have something unique which gives me an advantage”. That’s where the enthusiasm is born and it gives us boundless possibilities.
I ask myself a question why there is often a lack of enthusiasm in these publishing houses, bookstores etc.? The enthusiasm is missing because some of the listed elements are missing. Maybe the person who we speak to does not spare any time for sports, maybe he or she works the way they hate. Going further in this argumentation maybe they don’t see a sense of their work, or they are thick-skulled who think only in one proper way.

Fortunately when startup draws you in it smashes everything into pieces. It builds up its value due to a fact that it concentrates active people who believe in what they do. At the same time startup ruthlessly chews up those who are withdrawn and don’t see any sense in their everyday life.

My startup team won european award in Hack4Europe competition

June 15th, 2011 No comments

Poles awarded for application Art4EuropeOn 7-8 June the Polish edition of hackathon was held in Poznań, one of a series of four meetings of IT engineers from around the world called Hack4Europe. Around 30 software developers participate in each of these events. During three hacking sessions they try to create interesting applications which will be able to use data collected by Europeana  Foundation in an innovative way. Europeana provides special API, by using which it is possible to download data collected by many digital libraries and museums in Europe including Polish organizations of this type. Developers received access key to this API during the meeting and attempted to astonish the Committee. Software applications were created in three categories:

- software of the highest business value,

- software of the greatest social value

- and the most innovative one.

In the first category the winner was a team from one of the IT companies from Poznań, which prepared the application for cell phones named “Art4Europe”. It is the application for the Android system created by SaveUp Team represented by:

- Tomasz Grzywalski (iTraff Technology),

- Jakub Jurkiewicz  (iTraff Technology),

- Jakub Porzuczek  (Programa, iTraff Technology),

- Marcin Szajek  (Programa, iTraff Technology).

However, this is not all. Today the organizer of the event (Europeana Foundation) announced final results of Hack4Europe contest. Organizers invited the winning team to Brussels to receive the award from the vice-president of the European Commission and European Commissioner for Digital Agenda Neelie Kroes for the project of the highest commercial potential in the whole international contest. Art4Europe is an application which makes easier for the user to gain their knowledge about historical monuments. During our visit at the museum we can take a picture of a painting and the application will download data for us referring to selected painting by using very sophisticated methods of comparing pictures straight from Europeana API. The information will be presented to the user in original language as well as translated into the user’s language and what is more – it will be transformed into audio files which will make the process of gaining knowledge about culture much more pleasant.

Application might bring to mind Google Goggles a little bit. But it can prove to be more accurate. Goggles is a more universal search engine based on photos. Art4Europe application can only be used for advanced image recognition. This doesn’t change the fact that we should be very proud of our developers.

Let me remind you that the team has developed another interesting mobile application SaveUp. At this moment the application is available for iPhone, but the authors are planning a version for the Android system. When will it be? There is no date given so far.

Everyday life’s fears – startup sh#$@!

May 24th, 2011 No comments

Fear – I cannot see any words I would have to write here. People in Poland ask me if I’m not afraid that:

- allegro exists and it is the competition,

- nokaut exists and it is the competition,

- google googles exists and it is the competition,

- something else exists and it is a threat to me,

- people don’t use iPhone,

- iPad is pointless ……..

damn……. I’m scared, of course I’m scared. The patron (Maria Curie-Skłodowska) of my high school once said:

Nothing in life is to be feared. It is only to be understood”

A team can make a great progress or delay issues. With the best team you can turn poor things into the best. It is worth being afraid with a good team.

I’m still sailing but I’ll share my thoughts

May 17th, 2011 No comments

I’ve been receiving phone calls (I have no idea where these people got my number from ), emails, tweets from many wonderful people who ask me for evaluation of their business ideas, advice or thought. It’s a distinction for me because it is a nice feeling if someone wants a piece of advice from me. My lips are smiling.
I’m still sailing on enterprise assessment. I started my expedition in 2003 establishing my first company DVC Partners (ha… dvcpartners.com is still working). It’s been 8 years since that moment when together with Bober, Sławek and Dżokonda we were setting up BIPs (Public Information Bulletins) for public administration units, we were creating document circulation tools etc. Beautiful time it was, in a flat on 2nd floor in a block of flats, housing estate of Strzeszyn Grecki in Poznań we would fill up our printer with a medical syringe. We could not afford the ink. We took a public bus on our first visit to our client – town council of Szamotuły. On the way back Bober said: “Aras, maybe we should buy little fiat (maluch) for 100 USD so we would travel faster than using this damn public bus”.
Therefore I’m still sailing on boundless waters of entrepreneurship. I still haven’t learned a lot but I’ll share my thoughts. Write to me. Due to a lack of time I might not respond at once. Sometimes I have to read and think to answer you. If you want to drop by for a cup of coffee my doors are open for you in Poznań and in Warsaw as well.

Work with Venture Capital – startup ass kicking

May 3rd, 2011 No comments

I’m not sure why I got to writing such post but I felt somehow that somewhere among you there is a man who can use this information. Working with VC – it means someone gives you money; you make use of it to build startup. What did I notice?

1.  These people are really busy.During conferences, meetings, lazy coffee drinking – entrepreneurs sometimes ask me: What is your investment fund like? Is it worth to have VC back you, etc.? So let me tell you this: These guys are extremely busy. Every VC consists of people flying to conferences, travelling by cars from one meeting to another. These folks are really busy and you have to try hard to get their attention. You have to permanently knock on their door and ask questions. Use Twitter, FB, Beluga and all possible communication channels, to be in contact with them.

2. Do not care about NDA (non-disclosure agreement).During my last chat with Arek Hajduk (@ahajdukorg) in London we talked about this issue. Entrepreneurs are afraid to talk with VC about their ideas. They aim at signing the NDA. I understand this but let me tell you I am one of the examples of people who didn’t sign NDA while starting and continuing talks with VC. However, I humbly recommend: don’t worry about NDA. The idea without the author (yourself) is not worth too much. It might be executed in the short run but the vision you have in your head is not possible to execute without you. It cannot be copied.

3. Get ready for finance, papers and digging into the numbers.Just get ready for this. If you are more of a dealmaker, salesman, marketing specialist be prepared to acquire new ability – financial engineering.

4. Be quick, damn quick at working with VC.Expose progress. Talk about failures. Be frank about being depressed and your strategic dilemmas. This tightens cooperation. This shows faces of people who move around dark nooks of startup experience.

5. Partners – that’s how I would call it.You and your partner (VC guy) are partners. Everyone of us (you) is wrong, wanders around, searches in their own way. I don’t want to play a wise guy but I would like to emphasize one thing. Relation entrepreneur – VC is a partner relation which means you have to discuss issues, be open-ended, negotiate, talk, look at problems from different points of view. I must admit it is a fascinating experience. I think everyone involved in this relationship gets smarter, grows up, polishes their brain. This is a challenge – how many times I turned out to be mediocre in talks and negotiations, how many times I let myself down … I can’t even describe this. However it’s nice that after a certain time it is pure experience.

Damn, I guess I was kinda to imperative in this post. Otherwise somehow, I couldn’t collect my thoughts.

Color – startup which is not lean and agile but fat and heavy

April 28th, 2011 No comments

I have been watching startup Color recently with a great curiosity. This startup aroused enormous interest of the technology world and VC as it didn’t start off with the budget of a few million dollars but collected 41 million dollars right away (around 100 million PLN). Goddamn – what a number ! It is a complete contrast to a popular trend today of a lean startup (relatively little money to start with, relatively much work done, fast pivots).
After launching application Color into the market, the startup came in for some criticism from American and European media that it does not add anything new to the existing state of affairs. There were some posts saying, that Color does not solve basic problems in the field of photo sharing and it is some odd social-photo network.

For I chewed on this subject I share my conclusions and observations with you. Has anybody else pondered on this too?

I think that criticizing Color for collecting 41 million dollars is risky. Color, having secured such amount of funds at this stage doesn’t have to bother about next rounds of financing. There will probably not be round A, B and C with regard to the amount of secured capital (fuel). If there is a need for additional financing then Color will already have many users around the world. Color has struck globally at once. Global strike of a startup company from USA is usually rather rare. U.S. startups try to dominate U.S. market in the first place, then bounce on the springboard of American dollar and conquer Asia and Europe.

Going further, the importance of the team forming startup Color is increasing. With such amount of cash, ability to pivot decreases, considering certain comfort of fuel (cash). In relation to this, role of the team (appropriate people) increases. Ability of picking the right moment for changes can be considerably dormant. In a way having such amount of money doesn’t change anything considering flexibility of changing the course (which is beautiful in startups).

Apple and Color. In theory of management there is a term of company revival. Every company, even the largest and the richest one, enters the heights of its achievements and needs revival. I think if you study this problem academically the result would be that this company needs startup culture. Why? Well, revival of the company which has already implemented procedures and systems, has plenty of cash in its account and products on the market, requires energy. Large, heavy, organisms don’t have the energy. First of all because of habits and second of all because of fuel security (cash in the account). Apple revived perfectly. In a way it was a startup with a large amount of cash and the competent leader. Color is surely forming its structure because launching its global operations requires commitment of many people. Various sources show that Color has noted significant success in Japan. Therefore the need (if it occurs at all) to pivot will require changing much bigger structure (although younger) than for instance in case of a lean startup. Maturity stage of Color’s structure will come faster with regard to the scope of a global PR operation this company took up. It is definitely a great challenge to navigate such a fully loaded jet. I keep my fingers crossed for the success of this team.

Maybe you have some thoughts on this matter? I just want to add at the end that the startup world is amazing, so many wonderful things are happening in this world. Speed of changes, creativity, inventiveness. This is just fantastic. I love it!

Idea for a conference – failures, kick in the butt is also a move forward

April 2nd, 2011 No comments

For a certain time I have thought that it would be a very interesting idea to organize in our beloved country a conference dedicated to failure. Our cultural background makes us hide failure and only expose it to our relatives and close friends. Moving in the startup world is a series of failures, small and big ones. Burned millions of złotys (dollars) and lost 2 clients – small and big declines, fluctuations of self-confidence, positive and negative moods. It reminds me of McClure words “startup life is great except you fail a lot”.

I’m convinced that more and more often failure is a word that comes out of our mouths. It is not a disgrace to talk about failure. Our culture loosens up and people don’t look with disdain at those who didn’t succeed.I encourage all of you guys who organize events and conferences to organize meetings dedicated to failure. To support that idea I’m willing to share my experiences from USA and UK where I had the opportunity to participate in this kind of meetings. Hypothetical agenda of such conference/meeting could be as following: (every fallen entrepreneur speaks about themselves):

1. My business model I executed and failures (weaknesses) during its implementation

2. Where did I fall as a founder and originator?

3. Where did people (my team) fall?

4. Postmortem – i.e. what can I do in the future based on points 1, 2, 3?

Such compact challenge could last 15 – 20 minutes.

After set of talks a workshop could follow – discussion on improvements. Evening with the drinks at the bar could be an appropriate summary of the day.If you are starting with such event don’t hesitate to ping me for help, I’ll try to share my contacts and help in organizing such event.
